The past two years, the judge was Heston Blumenthal, who in2007 favored Selfridges Traditional and last year went forFortnum & Mason Almond. This year, Marcus Wareing stepped intothe big man’s shoes and picked Marks & Spencer Connoisseur asthe clear winner, beating pies costing more than twice as much. Here’s what the two-Michelin-starred U.K. chef had to sayin the taste test at Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley. (The priceper pie is in parentheses after each name.) The Co-operative Truly Irresistible (26.5 pence/44 cents):“It looks factory made. It’s what you’d expect when you go toyour normal supermarket but it’s nicely decorated in its ownway. Very dry pastry but it’s actually not bad. The filling’sOK. It’s not great pastry, though it’s nice and crumbly. Ifsomeone gave me this with a cup of tea and I was cold and it waswet outside, I’d be happy with that.” Score: 6/10. Duchy Original Organic, from Selfridges (1.12 pounds): “Italmost looks not quite finished but there’s something homelyabout it as well. Very dry. Very sweet. It’s almost biscuit-likerather than pastry-like. I can see why they’ve not put sugar ontop. It’s like a sweet filling; spicy as well. I don’t likethat. It’s not quite right. It’s far too dry. They’re 1.12pounds each? My God.” Score: 3/10. Harrods Mince Pies With Malt Whisky (1.15 pounds): “Thislooks homely, and quite nice. Still, it’s not a great mince pie. It’s almost hollow in areas and there’s no great flavor. It’sjust like there’s an alcoholic back flavor. The fruits haveslightly macerated in it but it hasn’t added anything becauseeverything else has let it down.” Score: 2/10. Konditor & Cook, from Selfridges (1.04 pounds): “I reallylike the look of that. It looks completely homemade. Did youmake this? It’s yours, isn’t it? The pastry’s not great. It’sdisappointing. They’ve used a shallow tin. They’ve put thefilling in, dumped a bit of pastry on top and cooked it. Eggwash on top. Plain, bland, boring.” Score: 2/10. Marks & Spencer Connoisseur deep-filled (50 pence):“That’s more like it: Pastry’s good, and lovely moisture to thefilling. I like that. The appearance is brilliant. It reminds meof a mince pie your grandma, who has been making pastry foryears and years, made. That has everything I’m looking for. Iwouldn’t serve that here because I should make my own but I’d belooking for a filling that tastes just like that and pastry thatlooks just like that. This one has everything. It’s way abovethe rest.” Score: 9.5/10. Marks & Spencer Luxury for Christmas all-butter deep-filled(38 pence). “Typical supermarket-looking mince pie.” (Breaksit open.) “The filling’s not even broken. The pastry’s justcome straight away from it. Very tangy. This is just notappealing. It’s a boring, bog-standard mince pie.” Score: 2/10. Marshfield Bakery, Selfridges (73.5 pence): “Now this isdefinitely a homemade mince pie. This is yours, Richard. I cantell. It has you written all over it. It’s like something youget at a fair or a school if the kids have made it. You’d expectmore from a professional baker.” (Takes a bite and shakes hishead.) “Zero. It’s not good. It’s clumsy. The mince is dry. Thepastry is dull: Seems like it has been worked so it’s quitehard. It’s not melting.” Score: 0/10. Pret a Manger (99 pence): “It looks nice. It’s likemarmalade in a way. I don’t like the sugar on top, the icingsugar. Not a great flavor. Quite boring. The pastry’s not bad. It’s soft. That would have been nice if they’d put a bit ofpastry on top rather than putting a stupid star on it. It’sflavorless really. Even the mince doesn’t shine.” Score: 3/10. Sainsbury Taste the Difference: (33 pence): “This hasfactory written all over it. It is bog standard, nothingexceptional. It has a bit of fatty flavor as well. Looks likeit’s suety. Butteriness is what I’m looking for, and a fillingthat has all the flavors of Christmas. Spicy and moist, not dry. This is average.” Score: 3/10. Selfridges (1 pound): “It has a nice finish to it — warmand homely. It’s not perfectly cooked. It has a lighter color inthe center.” Does he like such imperfections? “I do. Factoriesand big supermarkets go for the visuals. Strawberries at thistime of year look amazing but they taste shocking and people buythem because they look great. This is interesting because thepastry’s really soft, it’s nice pastry but rubbish filling. Thesultanas are cheap. I’m getting artificial flavor of alcoholthat lingers on the palate. That’s what I’m getting in a lot ofthese.” Score: 3/10. Starbucks (1.45 pounds): “Fruity. Soft pastry. It’s a bigmince pie, almost too big in a way because you can’t break itopen. The pastry is short, which is a nice sign. The stuffing’sfruity. It’s not bad. Not brilliant, but not bad.” Score: 5/10. Still. Baseball is Jeter’s priority. Pinstripes are hisperspective. He’s aware of the changes that come with commitmentand he isn’t prepared to make them. Not yet, anyway. The very best athletes are different from their teammatesand opponents. More is expected. More is required. Anyone who has ever worn a wedding ring knows that thingsdo, indeed, change. Add kids and they change even more. That’strue for everyone, including iconic athletes like Woods and hisfellow Nike Inc. endorser Roger Federer, who said as much afterthe birth of his twin girls. Some thought that getting married and having kids mightderail Woods, the golfer. It didn’t. True Values Woods, the family man, however, has apologized fortransgressions and for letting his family down. Says he hasn’tbeen true to his values. Woods in a statement on his Web siteadmitted to being far short of perfect, even if his golf game ispretty darn close. Before the Woods imbroglio broke, Jeter, who also covetshis privacy, found himself on the cover of the New York Post.Someone snapped a picture of the New York Yankees captain andhis latest gal pal, the actress Minka Kelly, frolicking in thesun, sand and surf of some exotic locale. Kelly is the latest in a long line of famous faces withromantic ties to Jeter, who recently led the Yankees to their27th World Series championship. Jeter’s girlfriends have included a former Miss Universe,Lara Dutta, Mariah Carey, Jordana Brewster, Adriana Lima,Vanessa Minnillo and the Jessicas — Alba and Biel. Just to namea few. And yet, the adjective most often attached to Jeter isn’twomanizer, but winner. Women want to be with Jeter. Men want tobe him. Adored, Respected Jeter is adored and respected by all, teammates andopponents alike. Never a disparaging word is heard about thebaseball star who guards his personal life with a Tiger-likeferocity. As of now, Woods’s endorsers are sticking by their mainman. They’re counting on a familiar refrain in sports: winningas cure-all. But it will be a while before Woods returns to golfand every day, it seems, there’s a new twist to this tale. His standing with consumers is plummeting. Woods’s ranking on a list of celebrity endorsers fell to24th from sixth, according to the David Brown Index, whichmarketers and advertising agencies use to gauge the ability ofpersonalities to influence consumer behavior. There hasn’t beena prime-time commercial featuring Woods since Nov. 29. While you haven’t seen Woods pitching products, you’veprobably seen the widely circulated e-mail that purports to showthe Woods family Christmas card. There’s Woods, battered andbruised, wife Elin by his side and smiling, with a golf club inher hand. Punch Line Woods, the ultimate pitchman, is now Woods, the punch line.Saturday Night Live. Jay Leno. Even late-night TV host DavidLetterman, who knows something about becoming tabloid fodder, istaking shots at the world’s most recognizable athlete. Back in February I wrote a column titled “Tiger Woods,Sports Needs You like Never Before,” in which I took issue withAlex Rodriguez’s argument that pressure made him useperformance-enhancing drugs. Laughable, is the word I used, especially when you considerthat Woods carries more of a burden each time out than anybaseball player. A-Rod has teammates like Jeter who can pick himup, help him out, I noted. Tiger Woods stood alone. Woods, at his best, had the power to inspire and awe. Ed Hardy discount
Someof those casual sports fans who tuned in each Sunday afternoonto see Woods win might never return. They believed in thegolfer. They believed in the man. History shows it’s a riskyproposition. Surely we can believe and trust in Jeter, who less than twoweeks ago was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. Then again, Woods is the only person to have won the awardtwice. As Woods knows, perspectives change. (Scott Soshnick is a Bloomberg News columnist. The opinionsexpressed are his own.) Click on “Send Comment” in the sidebar display to send aletter to the editor.
